CANHEIT Program

The CANHEIT Program has been launched! We’re excited for you to peruse the program on the CANHEIT website and see all of the more than 60 sessions, panels, demonstrations, and more that they have programmed for you. If you’d like to attend CANHEIT it will be held from June 19 - 21 at the University of Toronto. Registration is open until June 5 with in-person registration costing $499 and online only being $149.

Since Adrian Lim, national program co-ordinator, sat on the programming committee, we took the opportunity to ask for his three sessions that really highlight the diversity of the sessions on this year’s program.

Navigating higher education as newcomers

June 19 @ 2:05 pm EDT
The higher education sector is unique in many ways, from its ecosystem to its culture to its approach to building solutions. For a newcomer, navigating the environment can be challenging but also intriguing and exciting. We will share stories from our experience of entering HigherEd after working in other sectors - how we adapted to this new environment and the challenges we faced, how our experience working at other sectors helped us and what we learned along the way.

The fellowship of the SIEM: Collaboration is key for effective security

Even though a wise old wizard once advised "it's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door,” he didn’t realize that when it came to Cyber Security, it's just as dangerous staying inside with your door locked. The landscape is a dire one with threats hiding behind every IP and show no signs of slowing. Zero-day exploits seem to be published daily that expose swaths of your infrastructure. Phishing campaigns trick your users to hand out their passwords, or worse yet, download a malicious package that quickly spreads through your network and bringing down your systems. Confidential data is scooped up and sold on the dark web. These attacks are increasing in both frequency and sophistication, and the warning “it’s not if you get compromised, but when” is endless repeated by every security expert.

The demands on the security teams at many higher education institutions have never been higher, yet the new cyber arms-race have these same overworked security analysts drowning in a flurry of alphabet "solutions": IDS, IPS, EDR, XDR, IDM, NID. The promise of a SIEM – a Security Information Event Management system – was to create a singular view to unite this disparate information, yet the upfront investment in time, infrastructure, and training is daunting.

However, all is not lost. Building from ON-CHEC, ORION partnered with three of its constituents: Wilfrid Laurier University, Niagara College, and St. Lawrence College in a shared SIEM project leveraging Microsoft Sentinel and Microsoft Lighthouse. Each one of these institutions not only deployed security rules and alerts for their institution within the platform, but also shared their data with ORION’s Lighthouse instance with the goal of surfacing active threat vectors across the institutions. Using a common SOC within a Federated model and leveraging the power of community, we are together “finding bad things faster” for higher Education and assisting each other to make efficient use of scarce resources. Dare we say we quested for one ring to rule them all?’

Uncovering hidden biases: An equity, diversity, and inclusion journey through tech land

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee in UTS at McMaster University aims to raise awareness about the issue of bias in technology and its impact on marginalized communities. It provides an overview of examples of technology bias including, accessibility, gender, and race; and engages participants in an interactive discussion. The presenters acknowledge their own biases and are committed to promoting inclusive and equitable discussion throughout the presentation.
